Laminated teak — sometimes called "green teak" — is an engineered panel product manufactured from plantation-grown teak that combines the inherent qualities of teak timber with the dimensional stability of a laminated construction. The result is a deck that performs like solid teak, carries the same maintenance characteristics, and is manufactured from a fully traceable, sustainable timber supply chain.

TDS produces laminated teak decks using the same CNC manufacturing workflow, digital templating system, and SIS 440 caulking as our solid teak range — so crews manage and maintain the deck in exactly the same way. The difference is in the timber: younger plantation trees, precision kiln-dried, graded, and laminated to engineered tolerances.

Laminated teak is particularly well-suited to production boat programs, charter fleets, and refit projects where whole-life sustainability credentials and a consistent supply chain are important. It is also available for superyacht applications where specified.

What Sets It Apart

Laminated Teak Advantages

Sustainably Sourced Plantation Teak

Laminated teak is produced from responsibly managed plantation-grown trees — a younger, renewable timber source that reduces pressure on old-growth forests while delivering the characteristic density and oil content of premium teak.

Engineered for Dimensional Stability

Individual teak boards are kiln-dried to precise moisture content, then laminated under pressure. The resulting panels resist warping, cupping, and movement across the temperature and humidity extremes of the marine environment.

Consistent Grain & Density

Plantation teak yields a more uniform grain structure than old-growth timber. TDS hand-selects and grades every board for mineral content, grain orientation, and density before laminating — ensuring a consistent, high-quality finished deck.

TDS Manufacturing Precision

Laminated teak panels are CNC-machined at TDS's Sarasota facility to the same dimensional tolerances as our solid teak decks. Digital templating ensures a perfect fit for new builds and refit projects alike.

Maintained the Same Way as Solid Teak

Because laminated teak panels use solid teak boards — laminated together rather than left as a wide single piece — the deck surface is real teak in every respect. It is sanded, caulked with SIS 440, and maintained with TDS's ECO-100, ECO-300, and Teak Sealer & Protector exactly as you would a conventional solid teak deck.

The laminated construction also provides a benefit in the refit context: panels can be manufactured to thinner section depths without the cupping risk of solid wide planks, making them an efficient choice for decks where substrate clearance is limited.

TDS retains full documentation on timber origin, kiln treatment records, and laminating specifications for every batch — supporting CITES compliance and sustainability reporting for vessels under flag or classification requirements.

Common Questions

Laminated Teak FAQ

What is the difference between laminated teak and solid teak?

Solid teak decks use full-width planks cut directly from a log. Laminated teak panels are manufactured by bonding narrow teak boards together under pressure, then machining the laminated blank to the required plank width and thickness. The surface is real teak throughout — the lamination is in the panel's cross-section, not the face.

Why is laminated teak sometimes called 'green teak'?

The term 'green' refers to the timber's origin in actively managed plantation forests rather than old-growth or tropical rainforest sources. Plantation teak is harvested on a rotation cycle, making it a more environmentally traceable and sustainable material than older-growth teak.

Does laminated teak last as long as solid teak?

Laminated teak decks maintained to the same standard as solid teak perform comparably over their service life. The laminated construction can actually offer improved stability in some environments, as the engineered panel resists cupping and seasonal movement better than wide solid planks.

Is laminated teak maintained differently from solid teak?

No — maintenance is identical. Clean with TDS ECO-100 or ECO-300, inspect and re-caulk seams with SIS 440 as needed, and protect with TDS Teak Sealer & Protector. The surface is solid teak throughout and responds to all TDS maintenance products in the same way.

Is laminated teak available for superyacht projects?

Yes. TDS can supply laminated teak decks for superyacht applications where the owner or designer specifies sustainable timber credentials. Contact our project team to discuss specification, documentation, and supply chain requirements for your vessel.
